Nebbiolo

2018 / 2019

This red wine is originally from the native Piedmonte region, and is extremely rare in NZ. Known as Italy’s King of Wines, the name Nebbiolo is derived from the word fog, which is thought to describe the thick, natural bloom covering the ripe berries during the Autumn. It has an aroma of cigar box, poupoum and violets. Deceptively weak looking, it has been bottled unfiltered to retain the natural liquorice and gamey flavours, with a hint of almond on the finish. Best enjoyed with family or friends with hearty foods. It’s very high tannins and high acids enable it to age up to 20 years, and is best cellared for 3 – 5 years before drinking.

Sarah Heller MW said of the Nebbiolo 2013 -

"I can honestly say it is the most attractive example of Nebbiolo I’ve tried from outside of Italy - I’ve tried a few from Australia and the US.

Lovely concentrated ruby-garnet color
Evolved savory olive and dried leaf with floral perfume and slightly medicinal strawberry/cherry fruit support; quite mature on the palate; primary impression is of meaty, balsamic notes with sweet dried cherry fruit underneath and hints of white pepper.  Tannic structure is appropriately firm though not aggressive, acidity is bright and cleansing.  Complex and layered with some clear Nebbiolo identity and great balance and persistence, though demonstrating a fair degree of maturity at 4 years."

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

2020

The 2020 Chardonnay was aged on lees for 9 months in new French oak.  Also made in the Burgundian style, it has flavours of lime, citrus and flint.  Cameron Douglas gave this Chardonnay 92/100.

It also goes very well with Mahurangi Oysters!

Amelia

Our Wines

Amelia

2022

Made from the Viognier (V-yoN-yey) grape, Amelia is a light pale straw colour with a green hue. It has aromas of tropical fruits and pineapple with a hint of creamy oak complexities, flowing into a fully rounded and soft lingering finish.  Due to difficulty with the French pronunciation, it is named Amelia after my eldest grandaughter, who lives in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

The Amelia 2022 is a soft silky wine with aromas of tropical fruit, mango, and passion fruit with delicate floral notes. It has a silky balanced finish with just a touch of natural sweetness.

A great summer wine with a luscious texture make this very enjoyable to drink under the sun umbrella with family and friends, or served with spicy Asian food or seafood.  The silky finish goes especially well with Mahurangi Oysters - my favourite!

Barbera

Our Wines

Barbera

2020

This native Piemonte grape variety grown in the Matakana region has a purple colour with a vibrant glow in the glass. The 2020 Barbera was fermented in a clay amphora and remained on skins for 11 months before being pressed, filtered and bottled.  With aromas of summer berry fruits which are tasted on the front of the mouth, it has a soft, earthy flavour of raspberry, blackberry and cherries. This is a softer style red wine balanced with very low tannins and higher acidity.  While it is very enjoyable by itself, it is best enjoyed with food and family or friends. It will age between 5 to 7 years. Barbera is rarely grown or available to purchase in NZ, so this is a very unique wine.

Awarded 94 points by Cameron Douglas MS. Featured second in the May Dish magazine.  Also came in the top 10 Australasian tasting by Winetitles!

Dolcetto

Our Wines

Dolcetto

2022

This grape variety originally from Piedmonte is grown in the Matakana region, and has a very deep purple colour. Although the name means 'sweet one', this wine is very dry. The 2022 Dolcetto is made in a lighter style, so that it can be chilled and enjoyed as a 'Summer Red'.  With aromas of licorice and marinated cherries, in the mouth it starts out with cherries which mellow out to doris plums with a burst of licorice to leave a soft velvety after taste. It is low in acid but has some tannins, and so like most Italian red wines is best enjoyed with family or friends while enjoying food like pasta and pizza.  It is best drunk young.
